Olympic Countdown Hits Home for Mitchell

The article you see below was published in yesterday's (4/22/2012) The Sunday Times (Western Australian Newspaper) and online at www.perthnow.com.au. Cannot wait until the advertisement begins on Australian pay television provider Foxtel it should be interesting! It's nice to see Australian gymnastics being covered more in the media.

AUSTRALIA'S leading gymnast Lauren Mitchell has kept her focus on the task at hand, despite admitting this week's 100-day mark in the Olympic countdown "kind of hit" her.Mitchell confirmed her status as a medal threat at London's July Games with a gold medal on the floor at China's Zibo City World Cup and bronze on beam.
"It kind of hit me (at 100 days to go) and then it's into double-digits," Mitchell said.
"At the same time, our preparation's not going to change and we'll have to go through the same processes to be able to get to the single-digits.
"Peggy (Liddick) and our coaches have us all on the right track. (The world cup) was a pretty good one to go to because there was me and a Canadian girl with both of our start values pretty high on the floor.
"It was a good comp to see what I need to do and now I know. There's still definitely more to be worked on."
Australia's gymnastics squad will now prepare for the national championships at Sydney Olympic Park next month.
The meet will also be the selection trials for the Games and triple as an Australia v Japan tournament.
Mitchell broke her preparations for London's July Games on Wednesday to film her role in a Fox Sports promotion for the network's Olympics coverage.
"It's going to be really different to anything I've done before and it's really exciting," she said. "There's a bunch of Olympic athletes and they kind of morphed us all into one sequence, so it'll go from a diver, into me doing something, into a taekwondo person doing something else."
