Grable Earned 2 Titles as Women's NCAA Champs Concluded
7:55 AM
It was the final day of competition at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex Arena today and it saw the Individual Event Finals of the 2014 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships take place. Can I just say how much I loved the leotards we saw over the last three days?! Stunning designs. Senior All American Katherine Grable of the University of Arkansas earned the first and second National titles in the program's history after winning the Floor Exercise and sharing in the Vault title. Grable shared in the Vault title with Louisiana State Junior Rheagan Courville who earned her second National title. They both scored 9.975 which is the highest winning vault score in the finals in NCAA Women's Gymnastics history. University of Oklahoma Sophomore Haley Scaman finished third.
University of Florida Sophomore Bridget Sloan topped the Uneven Bars standings. Stanford University Junior Samantha Shapiro held off Redshirted Junior teammate Kristina Vaculik to finish in second place in the event. This is the first time in Stanford's program history that two gymnasts earned top-three results in the same event at the Individual Event Finals. In a 16-gymnast field, the University of Oklahoma Senior Taylor Spears was rock solid as she became Oklahoma's first Women's Individual Champion since 1988. I think I got a little teary watching University of Georgia Senior Lindsey Cheek perform her stellar Beam set to finished as the runner up on the event. Georgia Sophomore Mary Beth Box finished tied for third with Oregon State University Freshman Madeline Gardiner, Louisiana State University Freshman Sydney Ewing and University of Nebraska Senior Jamie Schleppenbach. Ewing's result on the Beam marked the highest finish on the apparatus since Susan Jackson won the apparatus title back in 2010. Gardiner became the first OSU gymnast since Leslie Mak in 2011 to qualify for the Beam final and she recorded OSU's best finish on the apparatus since Joy Selig won the title back in 1993. Grable was the final performer on the Floor Exercise and wrapped up an incredible collegiate career with the win. University of Michigan Senior Joanna Sampson and Oklahoma Sophomores Maile'ana Kanewa and Scaman were runners up on the event.
