The early preparation is expected to increase Malaysia’s chances of winning the country’s first Olympic Games gold medal in 2016 but, more importantly, the new approach is expected to cultivate a sports culture and broaden the nation’s support and awareness of the chosen Olympic sports.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek chaired the first Road to Rio steering committee meeting, which saw several new sports making it to the list and some unexpected ones being considered as well.
He named 11 sports – aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, fencing, men’s hockey, shooting, weightlifting and yachting. The three under review are golf, equestrian and boxing.
Great news for Gymnastics to be considered!!
