Gymmin' Miel!: Austria

Unable to add any more difficult elements to her routines after tearing a ligament in her thumb earlier this year, 2012 Austrian Olympian Barbara Gasser has been focusing on perfecting her elements she already does. TheObserver.ca has featured a fantastic article and video which includes footage of Barbara training as well as an interview with her. The article which is entitled "Gasser flies to Olympics under two flags" which you can see here. Definitely check it out, she seems like such a sweet young lady and I wish her all the best.

Some information from the article:

Gasser - a native of the west Austrian town of Lustenau - is a seven-time national champion in her country of birth. Her family moved to Sarnia in 2003.
“I really love Sarnia, and at this point, I would not think about ever moving from this place,” said Gasser, who became a dual citizen two years ago.
She trains with Dave and Liz Brubaker at Bluewater Gymnastics - the same club as newly-crowned Canadian Olympian Dominique Pegg.
“It’s really exciting that both of us can go, and for different countries, too,” Gasser said.
Pegg received a lot of attention for being selected to wear red and white in London, but Gasser said she doesn’t mind staying out of the limelight. She trains and competes in Austria a few months out of the year, where she receives quite a bit of publicity.
“I find that when I’m here, I’m glad I don’t get the attention,” she said. “It keeps me leveled on the ground, and I don’t think about those distractions.”

And on her future Olympic experience:

She’s also very self-motivated - a quality she said is passed down from her parents. She just completed the first year of her bachelor’s degree through Athabasca University’s online program - finishing her last exam Friday - and is training as a yoga instructor, all while preparing for the Olympics.
Gasser’s perseverance will be tested at the Olympics. She tore a ligament in her thumb earlier this year and it won’t heal in time for the games.
The injury’s meant she can’t add more difficult elements to her routines. Instead, she’ll have to work on perfecting the elements she does.
But as a self-proclaimed perfectionist, Gasser wants to make sure she takes time to appreciates the Olympic experience.
“It’s really just about enjoying every little moment, no matter how good or how bad it is,” she said.
She knows that despite wearing a different red and white uniform, there’ll be some Canucks cheering her on back home.
“I’ve heard that a lot,” she said. “They are proud and it makes me feel good.”

2010

2010 Innsbruck RG Grand Prix

The 2010 edition of the Innsbruck Rhythmic Gymnastics Grand Prix will be held from the 11th to the 13th of June. The competition will be held at the USI-Competition Hall Innsbruck and when they say on the official website that the hall is easy to get there, it's the honest truth!! I had a flight and tickets to watch the fifth World Cup event of the year, but some sad news has come to hand which I will share with you all very shortly. Anyways the organisational team took time out as a host for the last two years, but it's back and I am excited! Kanaeva and the Russians should dominate the Senior division, but don't count out Charkashyna, Staniouta and Garayeva. I haven't heard the names of many of the Juniors competing so will study up on them! Israeli competitor Neta Rivkin will not be in attendance, due to the death of her father.... All of us here at Keishlieta Gymnastique send our prayers and deepest sympathy to her and her family.

2008 Austrian Championships

This article was published 11 days ago, but I've been a little slow off the mark if you know what I mean - work and sickness and study! And some well deserved time in the gym of course. It is quite interesting to note the number of elite gymnasts who are based in a different country than what they compete for. Many it's time to look at a full list?

Barbara Gasser of Sarnia placed 19th all around at the 2008 European Gymnastics Championships currently taking place in Clermont-Ferrand France.

The 18-year-old gymnast is a member of the Bluewater Gymnastics Club in Sarnia, and has maintained her Austrian citizenship since she and her family moved to Canada almost five years ago. Barbara is a member of the Canadian Program as well and placed 12th in Canada at the 2007 Elite Canada Competition in December 2007.

Her result at the European Championships is a huge success for her and her native country. It stands as the best ever placing in the all around competition for an Austrian Gymnast,

"Barbara's leadership and performance also lead the team Austrian team to its best ever result," said her personal coach Dave Brubaker. Although 14th place as a team is a far cry from the medals, it was reason for an "Austrian Celebration" for the team that usually fluctuates between 15th and 20th in the European Gymnastics Union. Head coach Johanna Gratt was extremely pleased with the outcome, and explained that there were several comments in the post competition debriefing from European, judges and coaches, about the new style and look of the Austrian Team and Staff. Brubaker, one of the Bluewater Coaches, was also a member of the Coaching Team for Austria, at the 2008 Europeans.

Gasser will remain in Europe to compete in her first "World Cup" event in two weeks in Cottbus Germany. Immediately after she will be joined by Canadian teammates Emma Willis, Dominique Pegg, and Emily Bigras and together there foursome will tee off at the 2008 Austrian Team Championships. This will act as a tune up for Willis who will also remain in Europe for a few weeks to take part in the World Cup circuit in Maribor, Slovenia. The Debut for Gasser and Willis will mark the firsttime Bluewater athletes have ever been participating in the world cup circuit. "Anything can happen" says Brubaker "but we really need to look at these events for experience. There are athletes that follow this circuit all year long and our athletes are just getting there feet wet."

Pegg and Bigras will return home with Gasser after the Austrian Team Championship to continue in preparation for the 2008 National Gymnastics Championships in Calgary.

Willis and Gasser are both candidates for there respective National Teams for the upcoming World Championships to be held next year in London, England.
