2016 Cancun Classic

Women's NCAA Gymnastics competition season is underway after the University of Iowa, University of Arkansas and University of Michigan opened their seasons at the Cancun Classic in Cancun, Mexico. Michigan won the meet by 1.825 points over the University of Arkansas with Iowa finishing third. Congratulations to all the Freshmen who made their collegiate debuts - Michigan's Emma McLean and Olivia Karas, Arkansas' Makenzie Anderson and Sydney McGlone and Iowa's Maria Ortiz and Rose Piorkowski. Michigan Sophomore Lauren Marinez and Arkansas Sophomore Braie Speed who both sat out their Freshman years with injury made their debuts as did Iowa Sophomores Lanie Snyder (who did not see action last year) and Nikki Youd who returns after suffering a mid season injury last year. Junior Savannah Borman competed with the Iowa team for the first time after transferring from Arizona State University.

Michigan Junior Nicole Artz had a stellar meet, earning the All Around title as well as the honors on the Uneven Bars (9.900) and the Floor Exercise where she earned a MASSIVE 9.950! Karas had an outstanding debut earning the titles on the Vault (9.925) and Balance Beam (9.900) as well as finishing second in the All Around standings and on Floor Exercise (9.900). Arkansas Junior Amanda Wellick (9.900) and McGlone (9.875) rounded out the top three placings on the Vault, with Wellick finishing third in the All Around. Wellick, Michigan Senior Briley Casanova and Arkansas Sophomore Paige Zaziski all scored 9.850 on the Uneven Bars to tie for second, whilst on the Balance Beam Arkansas Senior Sydnie Dillard and Michigan's Artz and fellow Junior Talia Chiarelli all tied for second scoring 9.875. Chiarelli, Casanova and Wellick all tied for third on the Floor Exercise (9.850). Standout performers for Iowa were Maria Ortiz, Junior Mollie Drenth, Redshirted Senior Johanny Sotillo and Sophomore Melissa Zurawski.

Arkansas has a break until the 15th when they host the University of Georgia at home, backing up with another home on the 17th against the University of Oklahoma. The University of Iowa is set to host Northern Illinois University at home on the 9th in their home opener whilst the University of Michigan will also mark their home opener on the 9th against Georgia

And the Women's NCAA Gymnastics season is underway!

The first four meets of the first week of the NCAA Women's Gymnastics were contested last night. I spent the night at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center at the University of Florida, watching the Gators open the season with a commanding performance over Ball State University. It was a fantastic competition to mark the start of the season for the Gators with their gymnasts scooping all the titles on offer. Florida's Bridget Sloan impressed in the first meet of her collegiate career whilst Mackenzie Caquatto, Kytra Hunter and Randy Stageberg also impressed. Freshman Denaisha Christian of Ball State, had a great first meet, and I must say that it is great to see Brittney Emmons who is is in her fifth year of NCAA eligibility competing the All Around.

Louisiana State University also dominated their opener against North Carolina State at home in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Sophomore Rheagan Courville of LSU took out the All Around honors as well as the Balance Beam and Floor Exercise honors, with team mate Sarie Morrison earning the Vault and Uneven Bars titles. Louisiana's Freshman Jessica Savona made a solid debut for the team tying for third on Vault and second on the Balance Beam and finishing third on the Floor Exercise. Junior Diahanna Ham was a standout performer for North Carolina State.

The Cancun Classic saw the University of Michigan take out the team title with their highest team total since 2011. Brigham Young University finished second with Oregon State in third. Michigan's Joanna Sampson, Sachi Sugiyama and Katie Zurales went 1-2-3 in the All Around. Sampson picked up the Vault title, whilst Sugiyama, Sampson and Brigham Young Junior Raquel Willman tied for the honors on the Uneven Bars. Zurales picked up the Balance Beam title while Sugiyama also took out the Floor Exercise. Willman and fellow Junior Megan Bain were standout performers from Brigham Young, whilst for Oregon State University, Hailey Gaspar, Melanie Jones and Makayla Stambaugh were shining lights.

The NorCal Quad meet, held at The Event Center on the San Jose State University campus was won by Stanford University, with San Jose State finishing in second place with UC Davis beating out Sacramento State for third. Sacramento State Sophomore Kallilah McCartney won the All Around title over San Jose's Cami Guyer and Sacramento State Freshman Cassie Benning. Stanford Senior Nicole Dayton topped team mates Ivana Hong and Melissa Chuang for the Vault title, whilst on the Uneven Bars Stanford's Ashley Morgan tied with UC Davis' Michelle Ho for the title. Kristina Vaculik and Amanda Spinner both of Stanford tied for the Balance Beam honors, whilst San Jose State Junior Julia Greer took out the Floor title.

Bangladesh Gymnast to London Olympics

The image and article are from the University of Michigan. It's now known that Michigan Senior gymnast Syque Caesar who made his debut at the 2011 World Championships competing for Bangladesh, will be competing at the 2012 London Olympics. Making history for the nation, Caesar will be the first gymnast to compete at the London Games. Best of luck to him and all those who are throwing their support behind him. Here's what Michigan Gymnastics wrote:

University of Michigan senior men's gymnast Syque Caesar (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) has been selected to represent Bangladesh in artistic gymnastics at the 2012 Olympic Games, July 28-Aug. 7, in London, England, the Bangladesh Olympic Association announced April 18.
"To be selected for the Games is basically a dream come true," said Caesar of the selection. "I've always hoped to be able to go to the Olympics and for it to actually happen is very overwhelming and exciting. Everything I have done starting from when I first walked into a gym at six years old to competing at the elite level in college has contributed to where I am right now in gymnastics. The biggest part was coming to Michigan and improving at a rate that has made me very competitive. I must thank my family first and foremost for making years of sacrifices in order for me to follow my dreams. All of the coaches I've had have shaped me into the gymnast I am today and all of the teammates I have had at Michigan have also contributed to my competitiveness and overall love of the sport. I thank all of these people in my life for helping me get to where I am today as an Olympian."
The invitation comes after Caesar made history on Dec. 31, 2011, at the fourth Central South Asian Artistic Gymnastic Championships, where he earned the first gold medal in Bangladesh international history.
Caesar won the parallel bars competition with a score of 14.60 and was joined on the podium by Uzbekistan's Ruslan Irgashev, who took the silver medal (13.85), and India's Devesh Kumar, who won bronze (13.725). The Wolverine senior also took silver in the vault competition with a score of 14.25 and earned bronze in the floor exercise with a 13.525. His overall efforts on the meet resulted in a bronze medal in the all-around competition as well.
The senior missed the tail end of the NCAA season due to a slight pectoral injury but excelled at the beginning of the season at the Windy City Invitational and Penn State meets. At the Windy City, he won the parallel bar title with a 15.50, took third on floor (15.20), and took fourth in the all-around competition with a score of 83.20.
